A new semester just started, and we know you’re going to need a break from all that studying!

For the rest of January, with a student ID, receive your first class 2-for-1 (use the second class yourself, or share it with a friend!).

If you purchase a class card within the month of January with a student ID you’ll also get $5 off!

This offer is also available to middle and high school students – if your school doesn’t provide student IDs, bring a syllabus or text book from one of your current classes!

(Limit one of each per student.)

New Year’s Resolutions

I know the year isn’t even over yet, but we’ve already started thinking about our goals for next year!

One of our big goals for the future is to have all our classes consolidated at one location, so that we can really focus our efforts on making the space an ideal environment and providing the very best we can to our students and fellow dancers.  To that end, we are saving up for the expenses involved in such an endeavor.

If you want to help, please consider purchasing something from our etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/shamblingshimmies), sending a friend (or yourself, of course) to our classes, sharing our information with others that might be interested in belly dance, or giving to the studio fund directly.

This movement is part of the Shambling Shimmies Level 2 vocabulary, it is an add-on to the end of the Ghawazee Combo learned in Level 1.

Classification:  Fast

Basic Cue:

At least 1 8 count of Ghawazee Step turning between 45 and 90 degrees to left.  On the 8 count immediately before you want to begin the turn YIP on 7 (this will be on your R leg) to indicate the turns will begin on the following downbeat (the 1 of the next 8 count).

Variations:

In Level 2, this will always be a combo addition to the Ghawazee combo (following the half turns), never cued by itself and will always be 8 counts long (4 turns).  In higher levels, the move will be able to be cued by itself for any number of turns (within reason).

Zills/Timing (Level 2):

Timing – 8 count move not including the cue – 4 turns

The full Ghawazee combo including the spot turn is a minimum of 64 counts (16 measures)

Zill Pattern – Standard longa/gallop pattern OR optional R zill only on each “spot” of the move.  (this option may be easier when first starting to spin)

Shambling Shimmies Summer Hafla!

For anyone that might be following the website instead of our events on facebook, I would like to invite you to Join us on the 16th for the first ever Shambling Shimmies Summer Hafla!

Students from our Tuesday and Thursday classes are welcome to join us from 6-8 for a free makeup and costuming workshop before the party. We’ll be going over the basic elements of tribal belly dance costuming and discussing the purposes and benefits of each, and we’ll go through application of stage makeup together. Bring your makeup kit and a mirror that you can see your whole face in. If you’d like to attend, but you don’t participate in our regular classes, contact us to register for the workshop for a $20 fee.

The hafla itself will take place from 8-11, after the workshop. The party will be potluck style – BYOB and a covered dish to share – we’ll supply some basics (burgers, hot dogs, chips, etc).  Any dancin’ guests interested in performing for the rest of the attendees are welcome to do so – pretty please? we want to see! 🙂 We’ll have a sign up sheet at the party (please bring any recorded music on an MP3 player). We’ll also have some live music (bring your drums, zills, or other instruments) and, weather permitting, a fire dancing performance!

Please RSVP on the event on our page on facebook, or using the contact form on this website.  Hope to see you there!

Classes Now Available!

After a lot of organizing and planning, we’re very happy to announce that we now have classes available in Gainesville, Florida!

These are semi-private classes (4-6 students, 2 instructors). The current courses are each 6 weeks long (1 class per week, classes are an hour long).

Please see our classes page for the course list with descriptions and fee information (there are also links to a syllabus for each course so you can get more details about what the course will include).

Once we have enough people interested in a particular class, we’ll contact everyone and schedule the course according to what day/time works out for everyone.  If you’re interested in any of the courses, please let us know which ones (in the order of preference) and your available days (also in order of preference) and we’ll be sure to get back in touch with you!

Tell your friends!  Also, don’t hesitate to ask if you’d like to arrange a course just for yourself and your group of friends  – you can sign your group up for one of the standard courses, or for one-off lessons for special events, or just to work on some particular dance technique that you are interested in.

Happy Dancing!

Heather and Julia
